OVERVIEW
AMAZON RAINFOREST TOUR
DAY 1: PUERTO MALDONADO – MADRE DE DIOS RIVER – MONKEY ISLAND – ECO-LODGE
Our Driver awaits you at the airport (bus terminal) of Puerto Maldonado City to take you to our office. So, you can store your luggage unnecessary for the Amazon Rainforest Tour there. Then, the driver transports you to the city´s boarding wharf to continue your ride by motorboat. During the ride, you can appreciate some views of the Madre de Dios River till you arrive at our eco-lodge (approx. in an hour). Your Tour Guide welcomes you there and shows you around the lodge and your private cabin.
After a short rest, you are taken for an orientation walk to explore the surrounding jungle. When you return to the lodge, you are served lunch made of ingredients typical for Amazonia.
In the afternoon, get ready for a trip to Monkey Island (Isla de Monos). The island serves as a conservation centre for various monkeys. At present, you can observe capuchin monkeys there.
We return on the boat to the lodge and have a rest. Before dinner, we embark on a motorboat again and start out an evening cayman observation trip. Apart from caymans, we can spot capybaras, the biggest rodents in the world weighing up to 60 kg! At the end of the day, we enjoy dinner and then we go to sleep.
DAY 2: ECO-LODGE – SANDOVAL LAKE
Get ready for a long day as we wake up around 4 am. After a very early breakfast, we pack a provided snack and set out for a journey. Firstly, we board a motorboat bringing us to the checkpoint of the Tambopata National Reserve. Further, we continue hiking for 3 kilometres towards Sandoval Lake. When there, we board a small boat to start a 3-hour long ride observing the main attraction of the lake: a family of Giant Otters (that is about to extinct)!
Excepting them, we can spot various birds. For example, the most precious bird: hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) dating back to the Miocene epoch (23 million to 5 million years ago) which is also known under the Peruvian name “shansho”. Other than that, we can see cormorants, jacanas (Jacana jacana), condors or turtles. If we are lucky, we can view black caymans that can have up to 4 metres.
Then we paddle back to where we boarded the boat. Subsequently, we start our return hike observing wildlife on the way. For instance, red-howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus), common squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus), large-headed capuchins (Sapajus macrocephalus), Andean saddle-back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis), fasciated tiger herons (Tigrisoma fasciatum) or sloths.
A return to the checkpoint of the reserve (3 km) is followed by motorboat transportation back to our eco-lodge and rest in the cabins. Later on, we are served a well-deserved lunch. The afternoon is all dedicated to rest. After the sunset, an evening jungle tour is ready for us so you need a strong repellent. During the walk, you can see a variety of insect species, reptiles, amphibians and other nocturnal animals. When we get back, we have a three-course dinner before going to sleep.
DAY 3: ECO-LODGE – AMAZON RAINFOREST
In the morning, we enjoy our breakfast and get ready for a day full of adrenaline activities. Firstly, we start with something calmer, it means we go fishing. We get on a small boat where our Guide explains to us how to fish. Afterwards, we try our good luck on the Madre de Dios River. In case we catch a fish, the kitchen staff prepares it for us for lunch.
Secondly, we get ready for kayaking. For that reason, we board a motorboat again, get on a safety jacket and start a ride on the river. After a short distance, we can board a kayak and enjoy our ride while watching the surrounding landscape. For lunch, we get back to the eco-lodge to enjoy another typical Amazon meal.
In the afternoon, we walk in the jungle until we reach a place where we experience a canopy walk in the height of over 30 metres! During that, we can admire the Amazon Rainforest from a different point of view while taking lots of lovely pictures.
After the canopy, we move to a zip-line platform where our Guide shows us how to ride and use the safety harness that we were given. This is the most adrenaline sport of the day so enjoy the ride above Amazonian-aged trees!
Finally, we return to our eco-lodge and relax. In the evening, we are served dinner and go to sleep.
DAY 4: ECO-LODGE – MADRE DE DIOS RIVER – PUERTO MALDONADO
Last breakfast in the lodge and consequently saying good-bye to your Tour Guide and the local staff. Then you board a motorboat and we transport you back to Puerto Maldonado enjoying the views that the Madre de Dios River offers. Afterwards, we pick you up from the wharf and take you to our office again when you wait for your connection. In the time indicated, we bring you to the airport/bus terminal of Puerto Maldonado.
