DESCRIPTION

This travel program is designed exclusively for those travelers who wish to experience other sensations of culture. It is the direct contact with the local population in the Andean communities, learning the different arts of work, gastronomy, stories, music and cultivation techniques, ways of life. Many times the traveler is impressed with the natural life that an Andean inhabitant manifests, during the process of their daily life.

For this occasion, our community is Umasbamba, located on the route to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, an ancestral town that has kept all the arts, customs, and ways of life from its origins. Here the traveler will participate and learn, regarding gastronomy, agricultural crops, textiles, and music, delighting in each one of them in harmony with the people, until the afternoon hours and return to the city of Cusco.

Itinerary

EXPERIENTIAL TOURISM – UMASBAMBA

In the EXPERIENTIAL TOURISM – UMASBAMBA tour, in the first place, our community guide will pick you up at your hotel at 8:00 am, and then board our vehicle and go to the community of Umasbamba (Also, on the way we will appreciate part of the natural landscape, as well as some communities), until reaching Umasbamba, which is 1:20 hours from the city of Cusco. Likewise, when we arrive in the community, the residents will receive us dressed in their colorful costumes, typical of the area. Then, they will direct us to the presentation room, where the organized community will give us mate de muña “aromatic plant of the area” that is used for acclimatization, after we will go to the plantations of the community members, and we will participate in cultivation, hilling or harvest of products according to the season. Example according to the Andean calendar.

Activity Example According to the Andean Calendar:

August:   1st stage of potato and other crops cultivation:

  • Planting site preparation,
  • Sowing of native potatoes and other crops,
  • Irrigation of native potatoes and other crops.
September:
  • 1st potato hilling before it starts to bloom.
October:
  • 2nd potato hilling.
December:
  • 1st native potato harvest.

    2nd stage of potato and other crops cultivation:

  • Planting grasses as a fertilizer for the 2nd stage.
January:
  • Potato sowing,
  • Potato irrigation.
February:
  • 1st potato hilling before it starts to bloom.
March:
  • 2nd potato hilling.
April:
  • 2nd native potato harvest.
June:
  • Preparation of “chuño” (a type of potato flour), ”moraya” (a fermented “chuño”), and frozen potatoes, etc.
July:
  • Preparation of “chuño” (a type of potato flour), ”moraya” (a fermented “chuño”), and frozen potatoes, etc.

We will have a tasting of Andean products such as potatoes, occa, añu, beans, etc. And in the same way, our Andean lunch includes a starter, a main dish, and a drink, all prepared with Andean products from the area. Then we will have a demonstration of guinea pigs and their varieties and the demonstration of weaving, preparation of chicha “sacred drink of the Incas” and among other activities.

Finally, in the afternoon, we say goodbye to our host family and we will return to the city of Cusco on our private transport.
