HUMANTAY AND SALKANTAY LAGOON
DAY 1: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – CHALLAPATA – SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PAMPA
To visit HUMANTAY AND SALKANTAY LAGOON, first, at 4:30 am, we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to later take you by private transport (4 hours) to the village of Mollepata (2,900 m/9,514 ft). The village owes its name to the quantity of plantations of “mole” (Schinus mole, also known as Peruvian Peppertree). At the restaurant “La Casa Salkantay”, you are served American breakfast (eggs upon request, homemade bread, a fruit salad, fresh juices, tea, etc.). You can appreciate the beautiful views of the restaurant during breakfast. Later, you get on our vehicle again heading for Challapata. On the way, you can observe marvelous landscape changes such as mountains, grazing alpacas, sheep, and deers, and a diversity of flora of the “Puna” (High Andes) ecosystem.
Upon arrival to Challapata, you get ready for the trail and start trekking. You get to Soraypampa later, where you have lunch observing the impressive snow-capped mountains of Salkantay and Humantay. The mountains were considered deities by the Incas and they have been an important source of water for agriculture. After lunch, continue the trail to Salkantay Pampa (4,100 m / 13,500 ft), where you will camp, or you also have the option of spending the night in cabins or domes with panoramic views, and then have dinner.
